Michelle Bugbee is Of Counsel to the firm in its intellectual property (“IP”) practice, where she assists clients with IP strategy development, counseling clients on invention protection either through patenting and/or relying on trade secrets, patent infringement, invalidity, and clearance analyses, various IP transactional matters and IP litigation support. Michelle’s technical background is in chemical and manufacturing engineering, with significant experience in plastics, polymers, and sporting goods. Michelle’s transactional experience includes drafting and reviewing non-disclosure, joint development, and material transfer agreements, as well as various other agreements related to innovation and patenting.

Michelle is a very experienced engineer and IP attorney. After beginning her career as a process engineer with Monsanto, Michelle worked in engineering roles with several other companies in a number of industries for more than a decade before attending law school.  In 1998, while in law school, Michelle joined General Electric Company as a Patent Agent in their silicones group.  After graduating from law school, Michelle worked as an IP and Patent Attorney at Spalding Sports Worldwide, Inc. and SABIC Innovative Plastics, finally joining Solutia Inc., which was acquired by Eastman Chemical Company in 2012. She remained at Eastman Chemical until 2023, most recently serving as Senior Intellectual Property Counsel, before joining ND Galli Law in 2023.

Michelle has drafted and successfully prosecuted hundreds of patent applications throughout her years of practice.  In 2022, she was awarded the Technology Partnership Award at Eastman for successfully prosecuting 119 issued patents. Michelle has a B.S. Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a M.S. Manufacturing Engineering from University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and an MBA and JD from Western New England University.

Throughout her legal career, Michelle has mentored many law students, especially those interested in pursuing a career in intellectual property law. Michelle has also devoted considerable time to initiatives to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion (“DEI”) in the legal profession and in innovation.  As part of those efforts, Michelle co-chaired the Women in IP Committee of Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) Association for several years and helped to develop and launch the Diversity in Innovation Toolkit in 2019 (Diversity in Innovation Toolkit – Intellectual Property Owners Association (ipo.org)). She has been a speaker and moderator for a number of organizations on improving DEI in innovation and patenting.

Michelle is a Life Fellow of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation and has been a dedicated grant reviewer for the Western Massachusetts Regional Grant Advisory Committee for the Massachusetts Bar Foundation.  In 2022, Michelle was awarded the President’s Award by the Massachusetts Bar Foundation in recognition for her service.  Michelle also currently serves on the Hampshire County Access to Justice fundraising committee for Community Legal Aid in Massachusetts. In her spare time, Michelle enjoys traveling, gardening, and bike riding.
